The Vagina Monologues

"In The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous,  poignant, brave, highly original and thoroughly human stories. Based on interviews with a diverse group of women--from a Long Island antique dealer to a Bosnian refugee--the play brazenly explores the humor, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement hidden in vaginas. Having seen The Vagina Monologues, no one--woman or man--will ever look at the world the same way again."   (from the press release)

The Vagina Monologues was originally produced at HERE in 1996, and has subsequently been produced all over the world. Writer-performer Eve Ensler left the cast on January 23, 2000. Since February 8, 2000 the show has been performed by trios of actresses, each group for a few weeks only. Among the women who have appeared in the show since then are: Joy Behar, Brett Butler, Diahann Carroll, Nell Carter, Viola Davis, Linda Ellerbee, Mo Gaffney, Teri Garr, Donna Hanover, Katherine Helmond, Amy Irving, Judith Ivey, Erica Jong, Julie Kavner, Swoosie Kurtz, Ricki Lake, Audra McDonald, Rue McLanahan, Andrea Martin, Marsha Mason, Hayley Mills, Rita Moreno, Cynthia Nixon, Phylicia Rashad, Mercedes Ruehl, Brooke Shields, Holland Taylor, Marlo Thomas, and Marisa Tomei.

Current cast members Lea DeLaria, Tsidii Le Loka, and Phyllis Newman appear through October 22.
