Lady Bearcats fall to Clayton State in PBC semifinals

AUGUSTA, Ga.----The Lander women's basketball team couldn't overcome poor free throw shooting Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bearcats lost to Clayton College & State University, 74-68, in the semifinal round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament at Christenberry Fieldhouse. (Boxscore)

Lander, which finishes the season at 14-15, connected on only 19-of-32 free throws for 59.4 percent. Clayton State, the PBC regular season champions, improves to 23-6.

"We gave Clayton State a good effort, we just didn't give them a good effort at the free throw line," said Lander coach Jonathan Norton. "I think (our team) fought and fought and fought and did everything I asked them to do. We wanted to put ourselves in a situation to be able to win at the end of the game and we did that."

Jacquay White (pictured) led the Lander attack with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Earlier in the day White was named to the All-PBC team. White connected on 5-of-12 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws. Tracy Jacobs added 17 points  and eight rebounds and Keunna Thomas netted 13.

Clayton State, which faces the winner of Columbus State/Kennesaw State in Sunday's championship game, was led by Jamika Hindsman's 22 points and eight rebounds. Shelcey Harp and Jasmine Patterson scored 16 and 11 points respectively for the Lady Lakers.

Lander connected on 23-of-53 field goals for 43.4 percent and was only 3-of-8 from the three-point line. Lander out-rebounded the Lady Lakers, 40-38.

Clayton State connected on 24-of-62 floor shots for 38.7 percent, including 7-of-25 three pointers. The Lady Lakers were 19-of-27 from the free throw line for 70.4 percent.
