Purchase: A friend of mine had temporarily moved to Florida and sent me a package in the mail. It was still too early for bass up here in Missouri, but things had been going for quite a while down south. "Dear Phil," my friend wrote, "I have been tearing up the bass in the canals down here by Texas-rigging these centipedes. I have enclosed two of the colors that have been most effective, Watermelon Seed and Watermelon Candy." This is the same friend who introduced me to wacky worming, so I felt confident that the centipedes would have their day. I fished the centipedes a couple of times without success, but I was getting skunked on everything those days. Eventually a friend learned of the proverbial "honey hole." A hike through an overgrown and tick infested field led to largemouth heaven. On one trip I decided to break out the centipedes. I pulled in fish on cast after cast while my buddy cast lure after lure without so much as a hit. This was the best fishing I'd had in a long time, but believe it or not I began feeling a little bad for my friend and offered him some centipedes. Of course by that time the bass had started to turn off ... Available for $2.99 a bag from Bass Pro.
Likes: The centipede has to look like some
thing(s) that bass eat, because they love it. I generally got strikes as the lure fell, so it also must have some lifelike action when it is falling (the lure's plastic is very soft, helping in this regard). I don't know what YUM is (salt and a stinky smell?), but according to the bag these things are impregnated with it. I wouldn't eat it, but the bass love it. These plastics also have sparkles in them to help visibility, and as I figured out when I ran out of a productive color, color selection can be very important (luckily they come in probably 15-20 colors). Bottom line is that these things catch bass, which is what we all like.
Dislikes: Fish sometimes swallow these, and I have heard that that will kill them. If you plan on releasing a fish that kind of defeats the purpose. I am interested to try the new "plastics" made out of natural materials like corn.
Quality: Standard quality of a soft plastic, YUM makes it better.
Summary: The effectiveness of this shape made me anxious to experiment with other "creature baits." All it took was a little personal experience to convince me that fish can really turn on to something as subtly different as a plastic centipede.
