Premium Rate Numbers
Premium rate numbers offer a national commercial image, and
the business can decide what the call rate will be for the
customer in advance. This rate is typically higher than a
normal call and starting at around 25p a minute up to £1.50
a minute in the UK.
The call an be connected to an advice line, announcement
messages, a live operator or answer system. The service can
be part of a support system and whilst the customer pays a
higher rate of calls this could be one way that they pay for
the advice line that they are calling and therefore will be
happy to pay the higher rate.
Businesses will declare the rate that the calls will cost
on promotional items and where the number is referred to in
documentation so a caller is aware of the costs.
So premium rate numbers have become a practical way for businesses
to help support their own phone bills as well as contribute
to the ongoing costs of call centres, leased lines, advice
lines and phone promotions.
