Road Rules Ireland

Renting an automobile while traveling through Ireland is the best way to see the country. Ireland rental cars are usually cheap and convenient, making it easy to see all of the places on your itinerary at your own pace. Ireland has a great highway system, making it easy for visitors to navigate over the island. However, there are a few road rules that may differ from your own, so it is important to become familiar with them before hitting the streets.

Cars in Ireland drive on the left hand side of the road. This means that your steering wheel will be on the right side of the car, and you will shift with your left hand. Car rentals are often standard, so be sure to request an automatic if you are not comfortable with having to shift. Also keep in mind that since you will be driving in the left lane, you will be passing on the right.

Roundabouts (rotary exchanges) are common throughout Ireland, and are a place to exercise caution. Remember to give way to traffic from the right, and to use your signal to notify the driver behind you when you will be exiting or changing lanes.

Road signs in Ireland are easy to read and correspond with the universal signs that all countries use. Besides the above differences in driving that Ireland has, visitors should feel fairly at ease on the road, and will most likely enjoy the experience of seeing the country with the freedom of having a car.
