Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Banjar is the place for precious and semiprecious stones; amethysts, agates, saphires, even diamonds can be bought here. In Toko Makassar, JI. Simpang Sudimampir, a nice piece of Alexander will cost you Rp500 (only Rp75 a carat). The peddlers on the sidewalk down in the pasar area have about the same prices. For ring freaks there are some truly stunning deep-hued stones set in old remolded Dutch silver coins selling for Rp15002000. Visit the Cermaic Museum (only Rp75 by becak) on JI. Kuripan off the road to Matapura for Baseun'sprivate collection of Japanese, Chinese and old Dutch Delft Blue porcelain; some of thepieces are for sale. The craft and souvenir shops are on JI. Simpang Sudimampir. Fascinating stuff, but you pay for it. Dayak warriors carved from a rubberlike wood (Rp2-3000), lovely woven purses IRp1000), immaculately fine Ming pieces, plus ornamental Banjar brassware, a tradition which reaches back to the Hindu-Java era.
