Cavendish:
is famous for all the things that draw tourists to PEI, the red, sandy beaches, the beautiful weather and the friendly people. But it is also famed as the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of Anne of Green Gables. Wandering the streets and countryside, you`ll discover the real life counterparts of the landmarks of Anne`s Avonlea, including the Babbling Brook, the Lake of Shining Waters, The Haunted Wood, and Lover`s Lane. The Green Gables house itself, once the home of Montgomery`s friends David and Margaret MacNeill, was acquired by the National Park system in 1937, and is now open to the public. Not far away, Anne devotees can visit the site of Montgomery`s home, and walk the trails that so inspired the author. Beyond the pages of L.M. Montgomery`s writing, Cavendish offers a world of culture, heritage and nature to discover and still reverberates with the character of its settlers: the native Mik`maq, the Acadians and the Scottish immigrants. The island`s shores are alive with singular sand dunes, sandstone cliffs, salt marshes and the fascinating Acadian Forests. Whether you`re wading in the island`s shining waters or into the pages of fiction, The Prince Edward Island National Park offers daily interpretive programs as well as hiking trails and several kilometres of white sand beaches. Adjacent communities have other public recreation facilities, such as arenas and ballfields, which local residents may use. In the waters off Cavendish lies the wooden sailing shop Marco Polo. She set a world speed record in 1852 from Liverpool, England to Melbourne Australia, only to run aground in an 1883 gale. Around Stanley Bridge, is an area with scenic inlets and inland fishing on the Trout and Stanley Rivers. A small picturesque village cradled peacefully at the junction of Stanley River and New London Bay. Called Fyfe`s Ferry until 1865, Stanley Bridge enjoyed a closely-knit and self-sufficient community with moderate shipbuilding prosperity from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The Stanley Bridge wharf is also a popular stepping-off point for tuna fishing charters. Cavendish will wash over you with wonderand beauty. An unincorporated area, is located in Queens County in the central portion of Prince Edward Island
