Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Look for foreign faces, maybe someone could put you
up. The cheapest losmens are in the Kampung Baru area
where you come in on the prahus from Sulawesi. A good
one for the money is Hotel Bina Bersama, Rpl 000 per
person; fairly clean with a front balcony over the harbor.
Hotel Beringan is Rp750, but a bit of a dump. Hotel
Setia, JI. Kb. Sayur, down the street from the Atomic
is Rp1500 for a double room (quieter ones in the back).
eats: Expensive because most of the food is imported
from other parts of Indonesia; in the market a chicken
costs Rp2000. The best restaurants are in Kb. Sayur.
The Atomic is one highly overrated Chinese restaurant
(many foreigners eat here), but has delicious chili
crayfish. Sin Gheng, on the same street, has excellent
meals cheaper at Rp5-750; try the crab soup. Up on the
hills Mabel Steak House; Rp3500 for sirloin. Blue Sky
Restaurant in Kb. Sayur is a bit expensive but has incomparable
seafood, especially the abalone. For Padang-style food,
eat well for Rp500-1000 at Minang Saiyo, JI. Gajah Made
45.
