During the 90s the travel industry evolved. Greater numbers of people began taking more holidays and short breaks abroad following the boom in the no-frills airlines; easier access to the internet led to an increase in consumers’ arranging their own DIY holidays, and holidaymakers were being offered, and taking part in, many more adventurous sports and activities while away.

However, the travel insurance market remained virtually stagnant with travel agents’ monopolising sales through their ability to offer consumers’ the convenience of adding the cost of the cover onto the overall price of their holiday – but at a premium – against a backdrop of minimal competition from insurance specialists.

Having gained many years experience in the insurance industry James Richardson and Perry Wilson recognised this gap in the travel market. They saw that insurance providers just weren’t meeting the needs of holidaymakers and purchasing cover could often be a needlessly long and drawn out process. And in the case of the travel agents’, their hold on the market was enabling them to charge rip off prices in return for often poor levels of service and cover.

So James and Perry set out to put together a range of quality travel insurance packages that would really meet the needs of travellers’ in the new millennium by being easy to select and buy, at the lowest prices possible.

The result of this fresh and forward thinking approach was the launch of InsureandGo in 2000, offering a range of policies that automatically included cover for over 40 adventure activities and sports, free insurance for kids under 18, and winter sports included at no extra cost in its annual polices.

By stripping away all unnecessary administration its well designed website, www.insureandgo.com, enabled consumers to easily find the best policy for their needs, purchase their insurance and be covered in seconds.

And from an original staff of just two, the company now employs over 50 staff at its call centre based in Braintree, Essex. The company places great emphasis on staff training and only selects people who enjoy travelling themselves so that they are able to offer good advice to callers rather than just completing sales.

Developing innovative ways for consumers’ to buy travel insurance is a passion of James and Perry’s and in April 2002, InsureandGo launched its range of Scratch and Go cards – an industry first. Sold through WH Smith airport and train station outlets, the cards provide instant cover which can be arranged even in the departure lounge – real convenience for today’s travellers’.

Innovation doesn’t stop at the policies offered either as InsureandGo looks at every element to ensure it is providing real convenience and added value to its customers. One example of this is the company’s ‘loyalty card’ which sees customers’ insurance details provided to them on a credit card sized item, meaning they do not have to carry a paper policy around with them. Its standing within the trade has also grown and today InsureandGo works with an impressive partner list of over 40 companies, including the Admiral group, Norwich Union, Superdrug and Lycos - bringing even more choice in travel insurance to the consumer.

James Richardson and Perry Wilson
Company directors, InsureandGo

James Richardson has worked in the travel and insurance industry for eight years. As his market knowledge built, one element that James became especially interested in was the complexity behind medical assistance for travellers abroad. This interest grew into an ambition to find a more accessible way for consumers to purchase high value travel insurance at the lowest prices available.

Perry Wilson has 14 years experience in insurance broking. In 1999, he founded the first Marine Mechanical Breakdown Company, which he successfully sold to Warranty Holdings 24 months later.

Already friends, discussions between the pair, based on James’ ambition and Perry’s extensive experience following the sale of his company, rapidly progressed and resulted in the formation of InsureandGo in 2000.

Together the pair have implemented the most flexible systems available on the market, by moving away from the old style long quotes and data capture, providing consumers with easily accessible travel insurance via a multitude of platforms including the web, phone, WAP, scratch cards and digital TV.

This innovative thinking has ensured that in just over two years InsureandGo has risen to be one of the best value and most successful travel insurance brokers in the country.
