My Computer

Your view my be different. You can change the look by going to View on the top menu Learning how to use My Computer will help greatly in knowing where and how to store files or locate them when the need arises. Once you have mastered this tool, learning how to use Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer) will be much easier.
First lets click on the icon "My Computer" and you should end up with a screen similar to this.
3 1/2 Floppy (A) is of coarse your floppy drive, which you can use to store any information up to a file size of 1.44 megabytes. The (C:) is your hard drive. This is where all of your computers files are stored. Be it programs; to image files; to Word documents. Double click on the (C:) icon and you will end up with a screen like this.
Note the two highlighted folders. Unzipped is where your files will go when using WinZip Note the two folders that I have highlighted above. The AOL folder is normally where all your downloads will go. If you have downloaded a file, and haven't manipulated it's location, then within this folder is where it will be. The unzipped folder, is another one to be aware of. For if your downloaded file was zipped (compressed; to speed up downloading times), when you unzip files, this is where it will end up.
Lets double click on the AOL folder and take a look inside.
Please note; I do not have this picture maximized! Your view may look differently. You can change the look by clicking on "View" on the top menu and selecting any one of the options there.  While in this screen, please be careful of deleteing any of these files or folders.  For if you do, you will become familiar with what is known as the Blue Screen of Death or you will end up with error messages stating you are missing a .dll file. Never delete a program! Uninstall programs! There is a difference!
computer3.gif (14495 bytes) Again note that your view may be different looking, but it is basically the same information. The download folder, if you double click on it is where your downloads will be. Again, this is if you have not manipulated the file location when downloading. You can verify this location when in AOL, by clicking on "My AOL" on the top menu, then click on "Preferences", then click on the "Downloads" icon and you should have something similar to this.
Note in the text box, it should say C:\America Online (your version)\download If your window doesn't look like this, then what ever is in your text box (C:\America Online 4.0\download) is where your downloads are going. You can change it by either typing in the information exactly as shown above (if using AOL 5.0 or 3.0, make it match!) or by using the Browse button. Then click on the Up one level button (folder with the little arrow pointing up) till you get into some familiar territory.
In the text box, you can see the path that we have also chosen on how to get to the "Download" folder by using My Computer. We clicked on the C: drive, then AOL, then Download. Feel free to poke around in any of the FOLDERS. Look at their contents and even make some notes on what information lies within. You can always know where your at by the title bar ( the very top bar in red with C:\America Online 4.0 or the address bar contains your whereabouts too!) To move back up one level, click the folder with the up arrow or click the "X" on the title bar and just close the window.
You can see what you have located in your hard drive by clicking here~~> Your Hard Drive, The C: Drive   or what you have for downloads C:\America Online 4.0\download    for AOL 5.0 click here~~> C:\America Online 5.0\download  Use the Back button to return here! (arrow pointing to the left on the AOL menu bar)
right click the choose Send to, then the A: Drive The Organize folder in AOL is where all your Favorite web page information, along with all your buddies addresses are located.
I can't tell you how many folks I've seen on the message boards complaining about losing all their web page addresses. To save this valuable info, highlight the Organize folder by clicking on it once, then RIGHT click and do the above. (make sure you have an empty floppy in your A:drive ;-)  Do this every so often, as your Favorite places grow. Getting into the habit of backing up info is essential when it comes to computers. For its not a matter of "IF your computer is going to break down,,,,, its a matter of WHEN is it going to break down!"
Restoring your favorites, just insert the floppy, open up Explorer. Double click on the A:drive icon to show the contents of the A:drive in the right pane, then click on the plus sign next to the C:drive to show its contents in the left pane. Then drag and drop the Organize folder from the right pane with your RIGHT MOUSE button, and drop it on top of the AOL folder, then choose COPY HERE. If you have done things right, it will ask you if you want to replace the folder. If it doesn't ask, then you haven't done it right, choose cancel, and try again.
One last thing, if you are new to this, write down the name of the file you are downloading, this makes the job of locating the file much easier. With help locating files, visit my Visual Help pages on using the Find Function. For MIME help, download this word document. It was easier to show how to use Aladdin Expander with a Word Document. Contains NO macros! mime.doc or visit the MIME link just below.
