Romanian Politics

After the last King was forced to leave the country in 1947, Romania became a republic. For almost 50 years, Romania has been a communist country and a member of the Warsaw Pact. After WWII, the communist regime didn't take the power democratically, but with the help of immense presure from the Russians - the political game had already been played by Churchil, Stalin and Roosevelt and what the people actually wanted or elected didn't matter much. (the Comunist Party didn't win the elections - in fact they had very few votes - but they still formed the goverment) You can find more in our "history" section.

After the fall of the communists in 1989, Romania entered a long and difficult period of transition. Five elections have been held since which saw various parties forming the government. The leading parties of today are the Social Democratic Party (PSD), PUR, PNL and PD. The president of Romania is Traian Basescu.

After the Romanian constitution of 1991, Romania is headed by a president directly elected by popular vote, every 4 years. He/she is a mainly a mediator between the main political powers. He/she appoints a prime minister who forms the government - the executive power. The legislative body is the Romanian Parliament, bicameral, formed of the Romanian Senate - the upper house and the Chamber of Deputies - the lower house. The Parliament is formed proportionally by the political parties that obtain an election result of over 5%.

At present the main political contenders are PSD + PUR and PNL + PD.
The newly elected president of Romania is Traian Basescu. Due to the very close results in the elections most people think it will be hard to form a strong government.

Romania is a member of international organizations such as the UN, Nato, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Council of Europe (CE), Central European Initiative (CEI), Partnership for Peace (PFP), and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC)
and is hoping to join the EU in 2007 pending reforms and stronger anti-coruption measures.
