Papua New Guinea - Trobriand Island Postcards

 PAPUA NEW GUINEA

TROBRIAND ISLAND POSTCARDS

A Trobriand Islands craftsman hollows a log into a canoe. The upright ribs attached to the hull stand ready to receive the gunwales. Skilled sailors, the Trobriand Islanders still make ocean-going voyages in their canoes.

Intricate carvings cover the prow board of the completed canoe.

Sailing, Trobriand Island style.

A raised platform provides a cooling breeze and avoids high tide.

Trobriand Islands women pictured fishing or enjoying a meal epitomize the happy disposition of the Trobriand Islanders. In these isles, inheritance comes through the mother's line and the women enjoy independence, respect, and often the power to control tribal life.
