Review
We tested each activity monitoring program by first installing the program with all logging options enabled. Next, we ran different applications to see what activity was logged. During the test, we visited websites with Internet Explorer, engaged in chats with AOL Instant Messenger, sent emails using Outlook, Outlook Express, and Hotmail, and downloaded files using FTP and the P2P program Limewire.
Feature Set
KeyLoggerPro is a basic keystroke logger, other activity monitoring functions are not supported.
Installation
The installation of KeyLoggerPro went as expected. The first time the program was launched the ‘Options’ screen was opened so we could configure the program.
Ease of Use
KeyLoggerPro does one thing (log keystrokes) and does it well. The interface for viewing the log of keystrokes is simple but provides all the functionality that you would need. We could filter the log by date (using a calendar interface) and format the keystroke output such that the recording “Hekk[BACKSPACE][BACKSPACE]llo” appears as “Hello”. The program also has numerous options for insuring that it will stay hidden from users.
Monitoring Effectiveness
Since KeyLoggerPro only records keystrokes, it failed most of the test applications we ran. The program would only record what the user typed into instant messaging and email programs. For Internet Explorer, only web site URL’s typed into the address bar are logged. The P2P and FTP downloads were not recorded.
Documentation
The documentation for KeyLoggerPro is limited to an HTML file that is created during installation. Internet help resources do not provide any additional information.
Summary
KeyLoggerPro, as a key logger, is among the best of the applications we tested. As an overall activity monitor, however, the program is missing some key features like chat and email recording. In addition, KeyLoggerPro does not record websites accessed by clicking on an HTML link. For these reasons, we rated KeyLoggerPro in the bottom third of our rankings.
