Nice, the capital of the Cote d’Azur, has been a popular coastal, tourist destination for centuries. The site of an impressive Roman amphitheatre, this ancient city has been inhabited for 4,000 years and today it still retains the medieval 'vieille ville' (old town), with narrow, windy streets, bordered by terraced belle epoque buildings.
The 'Fountaine du Soleil' marks the city center with its bright pastel buildings of the Place Massena to the pedestrian shopping street ‘Rue de France’, full of exclusive shops, restaurants and cafes with outdoor terraces, filled with people even in winter. A centre of activity, with its fair share of theatres, museums and of course the beaches lined with palm-treed walkways, visitors cannot fail to find something to enjoy, even if it’s a simple stroll along the famous Promenade des Anglais, along the seafront.
Nice is spitting distance from glamorous resorts like Cannes and Monaco, and within easy reach of the rural villages of Provence. Because of its brilliant sunshine and relaxed living, Nice has attracted plenty of artists and writers. Dumas, Nietzsche, Apollinaire, Flaubert, Victor Hugo, George Sand, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall ... were among them.
Cosmopolitan, sophisticated and patrician with urban elegance but also mediterranean, cheerful and boisterous with a touch of Italy Nice offers a dazzling array of colourful impressions, including famously colourful Mardi Gras carnival, to its visitors.
