| There is no other way to describe it. Redfish fishing means excitement! Our experienced fishing guides will do what it takes to put you on to them. Redfish are probably one of the most sought after game fish in the Texas ranking up there will speckled trout and bass. Their cousins include the spotted seatrout interesting enough, black drum, and the Atlantic croaker. They are a sizeable fish that can grow up to 94 pounds and give one hell of a fight. The largest redfish ever caught in Texas was a 51.5 pound monster. See Texas Fishing Records for more. Redfish are also called red drum, bull reds, rat reds, and pescado colorado, but their scientific name is Sciaenops Ocellatus. | dot on their tail. It is rare to find a redfish with no dot but catching one that has several dots is pretty common. Redfish reach a size of about 11 inches and around 1 pound in about a year. At just two years of age they are known to grow up to 22 inches and 3 pounds. And after 3 years they can reach a size of 24 inches and 8 pounds. Redfish spawn when they reach an age of 3 or 4 years or about when they are 30". For this reason the size limit is 28". Spawning in Texas begins in August and ends around October. They are known to spawn in the Gulf and around passes. The eggs that they lay hatch in just 24 hours and are carried into the shallow bays by currents. The young redfish hideout in thick grassy areas for the first 3 years of their life. They live in remain in an area of about 3 square miles until they reach reproductive maturity. Redfish mainly feed off of small crabs, shrimp, small fish, and marine worms. They are bottom feeders. Sometimes you can see them feeding. Their tail sticks out of the water when they go after the smaller fish in shallow waters. This is what is called "tailing". |
