What is Family Filter?
Family Filter is a feature you can use to reduce objectionable content from your search results.

How Does Family Filter Work? Family Filter uses three methods to reduce the amount of objectionable content in your search results:
  1. AltaVista automatically categorizes pages to separate the less desirable pages from the rest of the search results. Offensive images are screened from image and video searches using our Photo Filter technology.
  2. AltaVista reviews Web site information using proprietary technology and attempts to block sites and pages containing sexual material and other mature and/or objectionable content.
  3. AltaVista removes pages deemed inappropriate by our editors and by other AltaVista users. Experienced editors from AltaVista update content lists frequently to provide you with the most current information, while excluding objectionable sites.

Family Filter Settings
You may choose one of the following screening options for your Family Filter:

  • All except Web Pages - Filters images, video and audio only (default setting.)
  • All - Filters all types of content: web pages, images, video and audio.
  • None - Turns off the Family Filter feature (no filtering.)
Your Family Filter preferences are set from the Family Filter Setup page.

Password Protection
You may protect your Family Filter settings by entering a password on the Family Filter setup page. Be sure to remember your password since you'll need it to make any changes to your Family Filter preferences.

Why do I have to reset Family Filter each time I visit AltaVista?
Some features of AltaVista, including Family Filter, use cookie technology to save a user's settings so that they don't have to be re-entered at every visit. If your browser is set up to reject cookies, you must reset the Family Filter and other settings each time you visit AltaVista. To protect your children, you can turn cookies on or you can use your browser's ability to filter Web sites instead of the AltaVista Family Filter.
