When you type a query and click the Search button, AltaVista retrieves video files that contain your search words in their file names, ALT text, nearby text, the page metatags and/or are embedded in the file.

When you click on a result

When you click on a page URL on a Video search results page, you are taken directly to the page that contains the video file. Sometimes the video file is not immediately apparent when you arrive on the page, and you may have to scroll down to find it.

Sometimes the video 'thumbnail' (or keyframe, as it is commonly known) looks different than the keyframe you saw on the AltaVista results page. It is therefore important to remember the name of the video file you clicked on when looking for it on the hosting page.

Features in Video results

All video results have a "More Info" page that gives more detail about that specific file. Some of the More Info pages have these links:
More media from this page:This link shows a list of other video files on the page.
Other pages with this file:This link shows a list of other Web pages that contain this video file. This is especially useful in the rare case that you cannot access the initial page.

Advanced Video Search

You can focus you results by making choices in these areas:
Show me:You can limit your results to AVI, MPEG, Quicktime, Windows Media, Real or other file types. By default AltaVista returns all types.
Duration:You can select files that are less than a minute or more than a minute long.
Sources:You can search the entire Web or AltaVista's partner sites. When an audio file comes from an AltaVista partner, AltaVista lists the source.
