Why
Children's Personalized
Books? An
Educators
Perspective
by Brenda
Rollins,

“Parent
Power: How
to Turn Your
Child into a
Proficient
Reader”
By Karen

|
Why
personalized
books?
Personalized
Gifts,
especially
personalized
childrens
books,
are
an
ideal
way
to
touch
a
child's
imagination
and
keep
their
interest.
Since
the
late’70’s,
there
have
been
a
number
of
research
studies
carried
out
at
major
universities
attempting
to
prove
that
personalized
learning
materials,
especially
books,
motivate
children
to
learn
and
enhance
their
chances
of
achievement.
Personalized
books
use
names,
places,
and
objects
that
are
familiar
to
a
child
and
make
learning
and
listening
much
more
enjoyable
because
the
situation
and
the
characters
in
a
book
are
very
familiar.
By
listening
to
the
books
being
read
or
by
reading
the
books
themselves,
children
are
motivated
to
learn
and,
as
a
by-product,
they
enjoy
what
they
are
reading
or
hearing.
Children
become
focused
- the
primary
ingredient
for
learning.
Finally, by
hearing
personalized
books,
children can
play the
part of the
characters
with names
just like
theirs and
they may
become
heroes to
themselves
and others
(DeMoulin,
1999).
Companies
such as
More4Kids
Inc. offer a
wide range
of fun and
educational
personalized
childrens
books and
personalized
childrens
music to
choose from.

I
Can
Read!!
By
Kerri
Charette
If only we
parents
could be as
confident in
our ability
to teach
children to
read as we
are certain
we can
teach
children to
speak!
Children
learn to
communicate
through
spoken words
even though
we do not
directly
teach
children to
talk ......
Parents,
too, need to
be
kidwatchers
by embracing
every
opportunity
to provide
opportunities
for young
learners to
make
connections
between
print and
meaning.
What can be
a seemingly
insignificant
conversation
takes on new
meaning when
the adult is
a
kidwatcher.
For example,
when my
friend’s
family
passes large
golden
arches, both
daughters
(ages two
and four),
start
singing,
"Ba-da-da-dah
I'm lovin'
it." These
girls are
connecting
the large M
with the
commercial
they know so
well.
Distressing?
Not to a
kidwatcher!

Like
any
parent,
you
want
your
child
to
be
a
proficient
reader.
This
means
having
not
only
the
capability
to
recite
the
words
on
a
page,
but
also
the
cognitive
skills
to
reach
into
the
depth
of
a
text.
Proficient
readers
are
analytical
thinkers
while
they
are
actually
reading
and
not
simply
after
they
finish.
Yet,
when
many
parents
sit
down
to
read
a
book
with
their
children,
valuable
reading
strategies
are
often
overlooked.
Instead,
most
of
the
emphasis
is
placed
on
“sounding
out”
when
the
child
pauses
at
a
challenging
word.
While
phonemic
awareness
–
the
conscious
understanding
of
the
spelling-to-sound
correspondence
–
is
a
vital
component
of
reading,
it
should
not
be
the
only
focus.

Home
Schooling
-
is
it
right
for
you?
by
Jennifer
Cartwright
It
is
important
for
a
parent
to
understand
his
or
her
specific
reason
for
choosing
home
schooling
and
to
be
aware
of
the
work
involved
in
home
schooling.
It
is
not
a
choice
to
be
made
lightly
or
in
the
heat
of
the
moment.
This
article
will
explore
rationales
for
a
decision
to
home
school
and
look
at
the
ramifications
of
the
choice
to
home
school.

Getting

is
a
lot
more

venting

it

well
worth
the
effort
and
everyone

learn
to
do

in
the

suffering
from
the
disorder.
In

have
epilepsy.
Watching
a

have
a

can
be
a
scary
experience,
especially
for
someone
who
has
never
seen
a
seizure
before.
