December Heat: An Inspector Espinoza Mystery
by Authors:
Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza
Hardcover
This is Inspector Espinosa's second Rio de Janeiro-based adventure, but the first to include some of the things that make Rio the city it is: street kids, prostitutes, violent cops and bad traffic.
A prostitute is murdered. The only suspect is a drunken ex-policeman who can remember nothing of the night in question, including where he dropped his wallet. Espinosa believes the ex-cop's story, but soon someone is shaking down drug dealers using the lost ID card and people start to go missing as rival dealers fight back.
Espinosa is an intuitive sort of detective, long on inspired guesses, short on form filling, with an eye for the girls. He takes huge risks without dwelling on the consequences - the way he engineers the final scene is little short of murder, for example - but Garcia-Roza is an authentic and readable challenger to the Anglo-American hegemony in this genre.
