The Power of Patterns

The reality of application development is that it is quite tedious to manually implement design patterns in a large application-maybe not on your first TransferObject, but definitely by the time you hit your fiftieth. A better way to harness the power of patterns is to describe your intended technical architecture in the form of a pattern framework, then have it automatically applied to the problem domain at hand. Over the last couple of years, Compuware has been helping to formalize a development approach that does just that. They call this approach model-driven, pattern-based (MDPB) development. In this session, Mike Burba, Product Manager of Compuware's OptimalJ, will describe how this technique is used to build J2EE applications.

Compuware and Software Development magazine present: "Web Application Performance: What You Don't Know Can Slow You Down"

If you're building distributed Web applications with .NET, not only do you expect different components to work together, you need them to do so efficiently. But components can come from different developers and diverse teams, causing unexpected bottlenecks. The result? The regular failure of Web applications to function under pressure, scale reliably and provide secure service to their customers. Join Peter Varhol, a widely published columnist and a member of Compuware's senior development staff, John Robbins, cofounder of Wintellect, a training, debugging, and consulting firm, and Alexandra Weber Morales, editor in chief of Software Development, as they discuss why distributed Web applications perform poorly-including some highly visible failures. You'll come away with a solid understanding of how to diagnose these problems at the unit-testing and application-testing level and which analysis tools and techniques are essential to banishing them from your shop.

Webcast was held Wednesday, April 21, 2004.

Accelerating J2EE development with Oracle9i Application Server and Compuware's OptimalJ and DevPartner Java Edition

Oracle9i Application Server is Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE 1.3) compatible and is the most productive platform for application developers. Through the power of patterns, OptimalJ accelerates business solutions by leveraging predefined and custom pattern modeling and code generation for deployment to the Oracle9i Application Server. It frees architects and designers of J2EE applications from repetitive coding tasks and shields them from the complex underpinnings of J2EE coding challenges. Compuware DevPartner Java Edition helps developers build reliable, high performance Java applications running on Oracle9iAS by resolving runtime-performance memory-utilization problems and other challenges quickly and easily. This seminar demonstrates how Oracle9iAS, when working in conjunction with OptimalJ and DevPartner Java Edition, can help customers model, develop and deploy highly reliable, scalable and performance-ready applications, while also helping reduce the resources needed to bring those applications to market sooner. This session will give you an opportunity to see a live demonstration and a chance to interact with the experts from the two companies. Register today!

Margo Visitacion, Forrester Research: Integrated IT Management

Dashboard-type views permit business managers and executives to see business events, to understand their subsequent impact, and to take corrective action. It is ironic, then, that IT - the enabler of many dashboard views - lacks any comprehensive view across the existing applications, infrastructure, and planned projects that encompass its sphere of responsibility. Infrastructure-monitoring software has existed for a decade or more, and two emerging disciplines-application portfolio management (APM) and project portfolio management (PPM)-provide visibility within their individual domains. However these colloquial views-where they exist- are insufficient.

In this Webinar, Margo Visitacion will discuss how convergence across these three areas in the next 24 to 36 months will culminate in integrated IT management (IIM) dashboards, which will enable IT management to reduce IT budgets by as much as 30% while realizing value increases of 10% to 15 % in the first year.

Melinda Ballou, META Group - Establishing an Approach to Enterprise Portfolio Management: Coordinating Project & Assets for the Adaptive Business

Typically, G2000 organizations struggle with project portfolio management – prioritizing the overall portfolio and establishing adaptive approaches to the allocation of financial and human resources. Yet the lack of coordination and lack of strategic, proactive management of both the asset portfolio and the project portfolio remains both extremely costly to many organizations and hidden. The application development staff that manage the project/program portfolio do not communicate well (or at all) with the operations staff that deals with the asset portfolio and vice versa. Neither group has an adequate inventory or approach to managing the portfolios separately let alone an integrated approach that encompasses the impact of, and relationship between, the project and the asset portfolios. In addition, the relationship between the application portfolio (which resides on the asset side) and the project portfolio is visceral, yet the understanding of that relationship is woefully inadequate. IT software projects, when completed, reside in the application portfolio (along with purchased and customized applications). In the vast majority of organizations, the application portfolio is poorly managed (if at all), so these organizations bear the tremendous cost and burden of continuing to support and maintain applications that may no longer be of value.

In this Webinar, we will address the following critical areas:

  • Understanding the challenges and advantages of coordinating project and asset portfolios;
  • Establishing effective processes and organizational strategies for enterprise portfolio management;
  • Incorporating automated tools solutions to manage the portfolios

Theresa Lanowitz, Gartner and Gerry Smith - Defining the Principles of Effective IT Governance: Maximizing the Value of Your IT Portfolio

Join Theresa Lanowitz, Research Director, Gartner Group and Gerry Smith, Compuware Corporation as they discuss the need for a holistic approach to IT management and governance. • A client focus within IT - understanding the needs of the business and managing internal clients like an external services organization

Excellence in IT Governance Web Cast Series: Margo Visitacion, Forrester - The Role of IT Portfolio Management in IT Governance

Register today for an exclusive series of Web casts in which industry experts in Corporate and IT Governance share their research findings and reveal what's working for top performing organizations. IT portfolio management plays a key role in IT Governance by providing visibility in the strategic planning and execution practices. Employing this, companies can collaborate in decision making and value realization. The realization that IT Portfolio Management can increase effective governance is growing quickly, but due to organizational maturity, adoption practices remain inconsistent. This presentation discusses the nuts and bolts of IT Portfolio Management, the organizational structures to facilitate IT Portfolio Management and how maturity places a key role in adoption and automation.
