Motorola continues to provide a wide range of 680X0 processor-based VMEbus
boards and is committed to extending the life of the 68K family. The Motorola
68K VMEbus series offers some of the world's finest VMEbus single-board
computers. The on-board resources and peripheral controllers associated with
these boards eliminate the need for additional modules in the VMEbus backplane,
reducing costs and freeing up valuable bus slots for other functions. Our 68K
VMEbus family of boards also provides you an ideal platform for embedded
monitoring and control applications. They help to minimize engineering expenses
while integrating value-added hardware and software applications into an
off-the-shelf product. Expansion is crucial to many of our customers and the 68K
VMEbus family achieves this through IndustryPack interface. IndustryPack modules

PowerPC Architecture
Motorola's line of VMEbus products using PowerPC® architecture-compatible
processors expands the boundaries for functionality and performance in the
VMEbus market. What differentiates this product family is our PowerPlus
Architecture. Based on in-house application specific integrated circuits (ASICs)
designed for exclusive use in our products, our boards offer unprecedented
levels of system performance. This is accomplished by addressing three critical
areas: optimizing processor and cache performance, minimizing memory bottlenecks
and optimizing system I/O throughput.
The evolution to PowerPlus II Architecture takes memory performance to new
levels with 582MB/s memory read bandwidth and 640MB/s burst write bandwidth.
Equally important as optimization of the memory bus is optimization of the
system bus for maximum system performance. While other chipsets top out at
70MB/s for PCI-to-memory bandwidth, the PowerPlus II Architecture supports
throughput of 80MB/s without starving the CPU of memory access.
Motorola's new AltiVec™ technology expands the capabilities of PowerPC
architecture-compatible microprocessors by providing leading-edge, general
purpose processing performance while concurrently addressing high-bandwidth data
processing and algorithm-intensive computations in a single-chip solution.
