Office Overview
Vinson & Elkins has over 700 lawyers practicing in 10 offices worldwide: Austin, Dallas, Houston, New York, Washington, Beijing, Dubai, London, Moscow and Tokyo. The Houston office, with over 380 lawyers, has all of the resources and the challenging legal work found in a large, international firm, while maintaining a collegial and informal work atmosphere. Here is what distinguishes us from other firms:
Stability
The firm was established in 1917. The firm has a diverse client base with over 3,900 active clients with billings in 2003. Excluding extraordinary contingent fee recoveries, firm revenues have increased each year over the past 10 years. The firm has little or no debt.
Professional Development
New associates are encouraged to quickly assume responsibility on assigned transactions and cases. Comprehensive, practice-specific training programs provide a common foundation for associates and speed their development of practical knowledge and skills. The firm has been recognized as having one of the top lawyer training programs in the country, offering over 250 accredited in-house training programs in 2003. The firm also sponsors in-house seminars on client development and relationship management. Our lawyers benefit from the use of the Training Center, a 4500-square-foot facility, that includes a formal courtroom, classrooms and state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment.
Individuals
Our lawyers come from almost every state and over a dozen foreign countries and graduated from over 100 law schools. We value individuals of diverse backgrounds and personalities—individuality, not conformity, is looked upon as an asset. Our lawyers enjoy a high degree of personal and professional freedom and a work environment that is collegial and supportive.
Summer Associate Program
The firm looks to its summer associate program for most of its new lawyers. Our summer program is designed to give law students an opportunity to see what the practice of law at Vinson & Elkins is like, and to become acquainted with our lawyers, our practice, our culture and our city. We want new lawyers who are creative and intelligent, who have strong interpersonal skills and who will continue our tradition of excellent client service.

We are located in the heart of downtown Houston, with breathtaking views of the city in all directions. We are the home of the Houston Texans (NFL) and the firm is within walking distance of Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros (MLB) and the new Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets (NBA). Also close by is Houston's world class Theater District—home of the Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Houston Symphony and the Tony Award-winning Alley Theater—as well as various restaurants and nightlife.
