The Drawbacks of a Work at Home Business
The positives of working in a home business have been preached and are a matter of record. What I would like to explore are the possible negatives of a home based business. I can speak to this from experience because I own and operate my own home based business. While I love what I do and I enjoy working from home, there are negative aspects that you need to be aware of if you are considering starting your own home business.
Working in a Home Business Can Be a Lonely Existence
When you work from home, you must be prepared to spend a lot of time by yourself. For some people, this may be a great thing, but there are personality types out there for which it would be a painful existence. I have known people throughout my life that just could not stand to be alone and if you fall into that category, working from home would not be the best career choice. If you like to be around co-workers and have the social life that a traditional work place affords, you should probably not consider a home based business.
Working in a Home Business Needs an Autonomous Worker
This aspect of working in a home business is, to a degree, related to the previous point. You will not have the same support groups that surround you in a traditional work place. Everything to do learned or accomplished rests on your shoulders and yours alone. You must be the kind of person that can learn on your own by reading manuals, researching the internet, or taking a class.
There will be no going to the cube next to you and asking your coworker to clarify the instructions on a given project. Many people need the structure and support that a work place can provide. If you are not a very autonomous personality, a home based business would be a very tough road for you to travel.
Working in a Home Business Is Not Always Consistent
A home business does not always provide a consistent income. Especially when you first begin building your business, there may be many lean months or even years. If this is not something that you are accustomed to living with, you should think twice before trying to make a home based business work. In fact, in the beginning, you may need to have a part-time job to make up for the lost income you were making at your traditional job.
Working in a Home Business Needs a Motivated Person
If you are going to make your business work, you need to be a self-motivated worker. One of the main personality types that a home based business demands is what people like to call a "go-getter." The business is no longer going to come to you. You have to go out a drum up business, you have to do the footwork to get your business noticed. You may have to work long hours, especially at first. Are you motivated to do whatever it takes to make your business work? If not, do not give up your day job.
