Pet is Lost? Most common things to do list.

When a pet is lost or missing it can be extremely traumatic, both for pet owner & the pet. Some important actions to take if a pet is lost are the following.

• File a pet lost report with your local animal control.

• Periodically search all pet shelters & pet doctor's offices in your area, preferably in person. When visiting a pet shelter, insist to see all the cages yourself. Warning: Many pet shelters only hold stray animals for a maximum 72-hour "stray hold". When this hold expires, the animal may be transferred to a pet adoption center or a new pet home or adopted to a new home.

• Post Pet lost flyers with a large photo & description of your pet & put all your contact information on the flyer. Good places to post are pet shelters, pet adoption centers, vet clinics, pet stores, distribute to as many to pet lovers & pet volunteers, grocery stores, school and play grounds, community bulletin boards, and around your neighborhood.

• Pet lost is a very important issue & appropriate action needs to be taken immediately Remember that pets can travel quickly and can cover a several mile radius in surprisingly little time.

• Search in the direction your pet often travels, when you are taking it our for a walk.

• Go to the immediate next-door neighbors & their kids to see if they have seen any pet animal in the past few hours. Give them your phone number and ask them to contact you immediately if your animal is sighted.

• Leave pet food and/or a personal belonging that has the pet owners scent on it near the entrance of your home or in the area where your animal was last sighted. This will encourage the pet to stay in the area even if you are not present

• Keep changing your pet lost posters constantly & with large pictures of your pet. Take down all the posters when your pet is found.

• Don't lose hope! Continue your search for at least 6 months before resigning yourself to the fact that your pet may truly be gone forever.
