Online

You can register as a Public Record Office Victoria user, search for and order records before you visit a PROV reading room, using Archives@Victoria. You will, however, need to visit one of our two Reading Rooms to view original records.

As part of a group

A large number of groups from family history and other societies are now visiting Public Record Office Victoria reading rooms each year. The rooms have limited seating, both for using original records and for consulting microforms, and are often filled to capacity.

If your group is planning a visit to either the Victorian or Ballarat Archives Centres in the next few months please contact the Manager of Reference Services to discuss your plans. You will then be more sure that your research is not frustrated by overcrowding or delays in receiving records.

If you can't visit us

You might consider using a search agent. Search agents undertake research for a fee. See PROVguide 15: List of Search Agents for contact details. Our Online Resources page also has a list of materials you can use to do research remotely.
