On
April 1, 1999, the new Canadian territory of Nunavut (nu-nah-voot)
was created on 772, 000 square miles of land traditionally occupied
by the Inuit. |

|
Because
most of the residents of Nunavut are Inuit, the government will use
Inuit language (inuktitut),
traditions, and values when deciding most issues. This new territory
was formed from more than half of the Northwest Territories. It
extends north from the northern borders of Ontario and Alberta and
east to the Atlantic Ocean. Despite having only 28 (yes,
twenty-eight) towns and some 28,000 people, Nunavut is larger than
the combined areas of Alaska and California !!! See more

and details on Nunavut by clicking here.
