What is a Debt Management Service

Your in debt, lot's of it, looking for help, and think that a debt management service may be the answer you're looking for. But before you jump right in a sign up, you need to make sure you understand exactly what a debt management service is, and what services such an organization will provides for / to you.

But make sure you're not confused by the generic term "debt management" and organizations that call the products the sell or options they offer a "service". Such organizations include those that offer debt consolidation loans, credit cards for folks with bad credit histories, and the like.

A debt management service is a company that that will help you manage your debt by acting as a liaison between you and your creditors. They provide a service to you by acting on your behalf, working directly with your creditors to get them to lower your interest rate, making sure that your payments are consistently on time, and they might even be able to negotiate a reduction in the amount your owe (but don't count on it).

You might pay them a fee to provide this service to you, but you can bet that, if the company is reputable, you'll get more back than you gave. Make sure you don't misunderstand here... you're still going to have to pay off your debts, but it'll happen quicker, and with less hassle than might otherwise have been the case.

Where Can You Find a Debt Management Service

So where can you find a reputable debt management service? Well, your best source for finding almost anything these days is the Internet. Simply do a search for "debt management service" and you'll get a list of.... well, a list of confusing entries, none of which seem to actually seem to point to a company that provides the service mentioned above.

The problem here is that many of the companies that provide a service like this call the service a "Plan", so you might try "debt management plan" instead.. Filter through the entries. Make sure you avoid sites that promote debt consolidation loans; although usually legitimate, you don't need another loan. What you want is for someone to help you work with your creditors - like the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

Avoiding Scams When Looking for a Debt Management Service

As will all thing Internet, scams abound in the "debt management" area. Many sites claim to offer this kind of service that you can't do without, or that kind of help that's the best of it's kind, but few actually provide a real debt management service. When you're searching out such a firm be on the lookout for sites that make promises or guarantees... nothing is ever guaranteed, and promises are easily broken.

Be wary of sites that contain spelling or grammatical errors, or sites that simply look cheap. And avoid sites that require that you call a "900" number. Reputable organizations work hard to ensure that their web site is easily understood, easy to use, attractive, effective, and not confusing.
