The repercussions of the Agence France Press lawsuit against Google, which resulted in the removal of all AFP content from Google News, reach farther than might be immediately apparent. Search Engine Guide is running a bitter diatribe from Bob Hoffman of Political Gateway, one of AFP's syndicators. Thanks to WebProNews for the tutorial on forwarding Gmail to mobile phones. You need to know the domain address of your cell phone provider's text-messaging service (the article provides a list); the rest is easy. You simply forward (manually or as an autoforward) to your ten-digit phone number @ the domain address. Gmail lets you create a positive filter through which some mail gets forwarded as a text message. In the slow game of capacity catch-up, Yahoo! plans to run the final mile in April, upgrading all free Yahoo! Mail accounts to one gigabyte. Anecdotally, I haven't noticed much movement away from Yahoo! to Google motivated by Gmail's capacity. Many people snapped up invitations out of curiosity, and I'm certain that some people switched, but I haven't seen a migrating trend. Google has added new ad unit designs and payment mtethods to AdSense. the new design is called Ad Links, and is a small list of four or five topical links. Each link leads to a page with more explicit AdWords ads. I have not seen Ad Links in action, so I don't know what that faux-landing page looks like. with Ad Links, a clickthrough is not a (paid) clickthrough. Adam Penenberg explores the techniques used by optimization companies to engineer top listings on Google result pages for their clients. Mainly, backlinking at any and all sites that will accept a link. Amusingly, the piece documents the source of some backlinks for two SEO companies that rank high in Google. Once again Google is burned by wrongheaded (in my opinion) trademark rulings in Europe. A French court has upheld a previous ruling in favor of two companies suing Google for allowing AdWords ads containing their trademarks to appear on results page upon which they are listed. Google must pay a fine of about $100,000. (I have commented before on the oddly low fines in French cases.)
