Barcelona city overview
Welcome to Catalonia's capital - one of the most dynamic and exciting cities on the western Mediterranean seaboard and home of spectacular Antonio Gaudi's Sagrada Familia cathedral, the Ramblas and Picasso's Museum. Come see the city's avant-garde architecture and relax on the Med!
Barcelona has long been dubbed ‘La Gran Encisera’ - the Great Enchantress. Little wonder with the bustle of the world's busiest seaport, the medieval romance of its Gothic Quarter, and a feast of Catalan Art Nouveau buildings.
Spain's traditional alternate capital is a millennium older than Madrid. For literally thousands of years, Barcelona has been at the crossroads of different cultures: French to the north, Italian to the east, Spanish to the west and, across the Mediterranean, African and Arabic. It is one of the reasons why Barcelona has also been a haven for the most visionary artists of the modern era, intellectuals, filmmakers and designers not to mention financiers, shipping magnates and industrialists.
Barcelona prides itself on its individuality. It is a semiautonomous region, one that has its own special history and language, which it has fought arduously to preserve. However, as is true everywhere in Spain, over once-sacred siesta, business hours are often different there from what foreigners might be used to. Many stores still close in the afternoon only to reopen after four o'clock and, on most nights, people don't dine until ten and don't go to bed until after midnight.
For some reason, it is one of the most nocturnally exciting cities on the planet. At times it seems as though, there are more clubs, discos, cafes and bars here than anywhere else in the world.
Whether you come to Barcelona for business or pleasure or both you will find it slightly magical and always stimulating.

Barcelona attractions
Monumental bullring
Barcelona continues to be a first-class place on the bullfighting scene. Now the bullfight season consists of 30 corridas mostly held in this first-class bullring which accomodates a bigger crowd than Pamplona during the Feria of San Fermin. Bullfights are held on Sunday between April and September at Gran Via Corts Catalanes 749. There is also a museum about the sport at the ring. Fights cost from ˆ15- ˆ75.
Monestir de Montserrat
50km (31mi) northwest of Barcelona, there is weird rocky crags, ruined hermitage caves, a monastery and hordes of tourists from the Costa Brava. The Monestir de Montserrat was founded in 1025 to commemorate visions of the Virgin Mary. Today it houses a community of about 80 monks, and pilgrims come to venerate La Moreneta (the Black Virgin), a 12th-century Romanesque wooden sculpture of Mary with the baby Jesus; La Moreneta has been Catalunya's official patron since 1881. The most dramatic approach to Montserrat is by cable car, which arrives just below the monastery after a thrilling whoop up the sheer mountainside.
