National Rail

The best of several train travel sites...
There are certain phrases designed to strike terror into the heart, and 'National Rail' is one of them. But don't let that scare you off – of all the timetable sites we tested, this was tracks ahead of the rest. This user-friendly one-stop shop from the Association of Train Operating Companies can help organise all the key elements of your train journey, apart from buying you a sandwich for lunch. The most useful section if you want to know exactly when your train's going to turn up is Today's Train Running, where you can get the latest updates on disruptions, RMT strike information and other transport links like ferries and the London Underground. This section also includes the recently-launched Live Departure Board that covers most of the UK's mainline stations. The website has other cool features up its sleeve: the next few months will see PDF pocket timetables being added, along with a downloadable list of amendments to Railtrack's printed national timetable. The site's main drawback is that you can't book online, but it does link to most of the UK's railway, underground and metro sites – and even to the UK Heritage Railway website if you fancy a quick steam ride.
