About This Site

This site is the National Library of Australia's primary interface for delivering services to both onsite and offsite users. The site is based on a Sun Solaris platform running the Apache Web server, a variety of Oracle databases and a range of PERL and Java (servlet) applications.

Pages on this site have been designed to operate on browsers that support the HyperText Markup Language (HTML 4.01 Transitional ) and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) standards. On browsers with limited support for these standards, pages will not render as well but the content should still be usable. Please contact us if you have trouble accessing any of our services.

A resource of around 15,000 HTML documents provides access to information about the Library, its collections, services and activities. These documents can be accessed through intuitive navigation paths from the Home Page or searched directly through our Site Search facility, based on the Ultraseek Server product.

Using our Web Site Metadata Strategy as a guide, we have added metadata to key documents to enhance federated access from the Australian Commonwealth Government Entry Point.

Our Catalogue, which provides access to over 2 million books and other materials in our collection, runs on dedicated Sun Microsystems hardware, accessible through this site via an HTTP/Z39.50 gateway using Endeavor's Voyager software. The Library's Kinetica Web service is based on the AMICUS product running on separate IBM servers accesible through this site via an HTTP/Z39.50 gateway using the LibriVision software package.

In accordance with the Federal Privacy Commissioner's Guidelines for Federal and ACT Government World Wide Websites, this web site incorporates a privacy statement which states what information is collected about individuals when they visit this site, how this information is used and if it is disclosed.

This web site also incorporates a statement on accessibility.
