You can click the search button to do a search or just hit "Enter", which will do a search with the search button you selected last. You don't have to type terms into the searchbox as you can also select words on web pages, copy text into your clipboard or drag and drop selected text to use as your query terms.
The drop-down button in the search box gives you access to the search history of your recently performed queries.
To open the results in a new window, hold the "Shift" key while hitting "Enter".

Search Drop-Down

The Search Drop-Down contains all search options available at AltaVista. It is a default button right beside the searchbox. After typing in your query you can either click the button directly to search the index currently indicated, or else click the drop-down arrow to select another index. Your search selection is sticky, which means that your last index choice will stay displayed until you choose a different one.

Find Word

Find Word within page: every term in the searchbox automatically generates a "Find" button in the Toolbar. Clicking one of these "Find" buttons will, like the Crtl+F command in windows, lets you skip through the document highlighting each occurrence of the term.
This button is not part of the default Toolbar setting. You can select it using the drop-down or choose to display it as a separate button by changing your Toolbar settings.

Popup Blocker

Popup Blocker: Websites often use Javascripts to load advertisements while you are browsing a page. When loaded, these scripts open popups, mostly while you are browsing or when you leave the page. The Popup Blocker disables most of these scripts preventing the actual popup from appearing. When blocking a popup the Toolbar plays a windows system sound and adds one to the counter. After counting to 999 it resets again to 0.
The Popup Blocker is enabled by default, you can change these settings on the Toolbar Settings Page.

Vertical Bar on left

The vertical bar on the left of the Toolbar lets you relocate the Toolbar within any internet Explorer task bars.

Drop-down arrow

A Drop-down arrow appears if a button offers you more than one option to choose from.

Arrow on Right

This arrow appears on the right-side of the Toolbar when more buttons exist than the width of your window allows. Clicking it retrieves these hidden buttons.
