Why Go: Trip Ideas

Orange County, CA: The Gold Coast
The stretch of land from Newport to Dana Point is a heavenly trail of dramatic cliffs, azure waters, and picturesque upscale towns.

Discover Newport Beach, where yachts preen in sparkling bays and early risers join pelicans to watch fish dories roll in from the ocean. Bask in the sun at Corona Del Mar State Beach, bike or roller-blade down Newport Pier, or take the ferry to Balboa Island's famous beaches.

Conjure up your inner artist in Laguna. Inhale the eucalyptus on Forest Avenue, Laguna's main street dotted with art galleries, sidewalk cafes and flower stands, then skip down to Main Beach Park for a Norman Rockwell-style portrait of California.

Golf atop Dana Point's green jagged cliffs overlooking Salt Creek Beach. Try your best to focus on the ball while a breathtaking view beckons, or give up and indulge in a picnic below--where warm sand, cool surf and jeweled tide pools await.

Choose to exercise your brainpower instead of your tan in the scholastic city of Irvine, home to UC Irvine. Or, give your credit card a workout at the South Coast Plaza mall in Costa Mesa--an homage to all things Gucci, Prada, and Versace.

Recommendations & Suggestions:

Balboa Island
Balboa Island
Phone: 949.722.1611
Lined with charming California souvenir shops, restaurants and snack bars selling frozen bananas and Balboa bars, the island's Main Street is always populated with a lively crowd enjoying the sun. Grab your ice cream and take a lovely two-and-a-half mile walk around the entire rim of the island, taking in the yachts of the Bay and the narrowly-crowded, multi-million dollar waterfront homes. We suggest a scenic means of transporation to Balboa Island: the four minute ferry ride. Ferries leaves from Balboa Peninsula to Balboa Island, and back every four minutes from 6:30 am to midnight during the week, and from 6:30 am to 2am on the weekends. Fares are 50 cents per person and $1.25 per car. Call Balboa Island Ferry at 949. 673.1070 for more information.

Head for the beach! Roll up those weekend jeans for a stroll along the water's edge or let that beach blanket rip for a snooze on a warm blanket in the sun. Picnics with yummy snacks and wine are encouraged. After a refreshing swim or a nap, walk to the tide pools at the beach's end. Bring your shoes to walk the black rock formations glistening in the sun. Bend down to explore the pools of clear ocean water, home to tiny, colorful sea creatures.

Main Beach Park
100 Pacific Coast Highway
Phone: 949.494.1018
Main Beach Park is Laguna's main beach; hence, the title! In the heart of downtown at Broadway and the Pacific Coast Highway, this glorious beach stretches its golden sand in both directions. The Main Beach Park is where everyone comes, either to lay in the sand with a good book, watch surfers and boats on the horizon, or meet friends for a game of basketball or volleyball. Have a swim here, and then take a walk along the sand to Heisler Park, a grassy terrace that sits on the ocean cliff between Laguna's popular diving beaches, Bird Rock and Diver's Cove, and their glistening, turquoise bays.

Newport Pier
Newport Pier runs along Oceanfront
Phone: 949.722.1611
Follow Newport Boulevard into the Newport Pier area, passing the landmark 1952 Crab Cooker restaurant in its red building with the big clock out front. Speaking of landmarks, Newport Pier is where the historic Dory Fleet fisherman of the West Coast have arrived each morning since their first catch in 1891. Honor tradition and order up some clam chowder! You'll find plenty in the lively McFadden Square on the pier, which has many great snack bars featuring other pier-musts like pizza and fish tacos. Rent a bike or some in-line skates, grab a slice and cruise this happy pier on some wheels!
