A Dutch traveller of the 18th century described Debrecen as “a town wrapped in sunshine”; the largest city in the provinces of Hungary is also regularly mentioned as the town of festivals, the Calvinist Rome, the town of schools and even the town of permanence. Debrecen wears these attributes with pride, although its dynamic progress characterizing the last couple of years seems to contradict the last one – the city, which has always been ready for a renewal in its history of more than 640 years, entered the 21st century with a new facade, a very ”European” one.

The main square of of the city is today a pedestrian precinct, a community place loved by locals and visitors alike – its terraces and summer evening programmes attract everyone, and the renewed Déri Square does the same, with the cosy atmosphere of its fountains conjuring up the spirit of the bygone days. National and international sporting events are also frequently held in the Főnix Hall.

Debrecen is a lively, fast developing city. The construction of a conference centre starts this year, embodying an old dream of this town of schools, buildings mellowed with age in the downtown area are being renewed one after the other, new atmospheric walking circuses, underground parking lots and sporting facilities are being built, attractive restaurants and modern shopping centres are opened constantly. All of these make Debrecen an interesting town that is always able to surprise tourists with unforgettable experiences.
