About Alaska Smoked Fish...

Mike’s great, great grandfather.... just happened to be named....no lie....Lou Salmon

Taste ~ Quality ~ Packaging ~ Price ~  Availability

Lou SalmonThese are all important......not just to you, but to US.  People . . . buy . . . .products.  We purchase them, take them home, and eat them....and most of the time forget about them.

We have a different plan. We have what we think is a unique little story that just might tickle your imagination and make you grin when our package shows up at your place.

It lets you know that we have a ‘history’ of what we are doing. It gave us a smile, looking into the history and finding out just how much of the past fits into our present daily lives.  We thought it would be fun to share with you.

We, Mike and Karen Keating, are the owners of Big Blue Fisheries. Mike’s great, great grandfather on his father’s mothers’ side just happened to be named....no lie....Lou Salmon. As his name would imply, Lou loved to fish and did so often near the Hudson River community in which he lived.  See his picture above.

Lou actually fished and provided for ‘Gentlemen’s’ Clubs of NYC. He fished in Conklinville, NY. Even before this, Lou's son Thomas Salmion did the same......going back to the 1870’s. He used an Adirondack guide boat (which we will always proudly have in the family) to hunt and provide fish and game for various clubs and saloons. Now, somewhere down the road, the great grandchildren of these fishermen/hunters felt the stirring of the salmon in their blood and decided to build their own “smoker” at the ripe age of about 10.

So, in 1966, at their house in Renton, Washington, Mike and brother Pat (that's them in the boat at left) made their first attempt at their own enterprise: smoking fish for their friends.  This was obviously not going to be Mike’s last enterprise.  And so it turned out, Mike and his wife Karen now also operate a busy fishing charter business (Big Blue Charters) here in Sitka.   Mike's entrepreneurial nature has truly shown itself. . . .

If you are like most people, when you go to ‘buy’ a product you want to have the aura of professionalism surrounding those you buy from; you want to “see” the quality of what you’re buying; and you want to feel that your concerns are OUR concerns and that you will be taken care of promptly.

That's how we want to approach our business relationship with you.  Fishing and providing good quality wild food is in our blood, as you can see.

We like to think Lou and his dad Thomas would be proud of their great grandchildren.  And we think you'll be pleased, too.  Give our products a try.  We think you'll be back for more!
