What is Page Rank?

We will not go in to masses of detail on something that is already widely published, so if you want to find out what the developers behind Google say about Page Rank then visit their Page Rank Explained page.

We will touch on the subject in just enough detail to help you understand the basics behind the complex linking system that every webmaster goes on so passionately about.

Google PageRank The Google Toolbar once downloaded and installed will offer many functions, but the one we are talking about here is the PageRank. When you hover the mouse over the PageRank it will show the site's ranking out of 10. If you develop a new site the page rank at first will be 0. If you have an excellent website that has been around for a while and there are plenty of links to the site you can expect to see a ranking of 3 upwards. Most webmasters look for a page ranking of 4 or 5. Any higher than 5 then the chances are the site will have plenty of high quality links.

Other webmasters may link to your site because they are a directory and your site fits in a category. They may link to you as a reference. Basically develop some quality content and you should get some links. Other way to get links is partner/ affiliate with other website.

Google will reward sites with plenty of quality links with a Page Rank. The ranking will not guarantee you hits and it will not guarantee a quality website, but it will certainly help.

Linking your website from a site with a higher page rank can be a great help for your own website's page ranking. Page ranking is a complex process and is bead read straight from the mouths of Google engineers. For example, if you have a site that sells sunglasses rather than just use the keyword sunglasses to link to your site, you may wish to use cheap sunglasses.
