NOAA and NASA officials confirmed that a new NOAA polar-orbiting environmental satellite, launched early Friday morning, has reached orbit. The NOAA-N satellite—now designated NOAA-18—is critical in the development of a global Earth observation program and improving NOAA's weather and climate forecasts and U.S. search and rescue operations. The launch also starts a new era of international cooperation. "We look forward to the benefits from NOAA-18 and its contributions toward strengthening the Global Earth Observation System of Systems," said retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. "NOAA-18 brings us a step closer to having true global coverage of the Earth's changing environment."

NOAA NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY PROGRAM LAUNCHES NEW EDUCATION WEB SITE — The NOAA National Marine Sanctuary Program unveiled a new education Web site as part of a continuing NOAA effort to enhance public awareness, understanding and appreciation of the marine environment. The new site is designed to assist the general public in learning about America's 13 NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries and the Northwest Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve to support ocean literacy in America's classrooms.

NOAA ISSUES 2005 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON OUTLOOK; Another Above Normal Season Expected — NOAA hurricane forecasters are predicting another above-normal hurricane season on the heels of last year's destructive and historic hurricane season. "NOAA's prediction for the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season is for 12 to15 tropical storms, with seven to nine becoming hurricanes, of which three to five could become major hurricanes," said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.
