Bifocal Contact Lenses GuideIt is a common misconception that contact lenses are only for those people with minor eye problems - either slight near or far-sightedness. In fact, bifocal contact lenses have been available for quite some time. If you have been suffering the irritation of wearing heavy bifocal glasses, you should consider bifocal contacts as a viable - and more comfortable - alternative to 'coke-bottle' glasses. Just a mention of the word “bifocals” conjures up visions of grandpa pouring over the Sunday paper, sipping coffee, black-framed glasses low on his nose. If you’ve been diagnosed with presbyopia, or the condition in which the eye has a difficult time focusing on near objects, you no doubt have fears of becoming grandpa. Makers of contact lenses, however, have solved this spectacle dilemma for many who suffer from presbyopia by developing contacts specifically designed for this condition. Bifocal contacts have been around for several years in soft and hard, gas-permeable types, and in 1999 manufacturers began producing the first disposable bifocal contacts, just in time for aging baby boomers. Bifocal contacts work much differently from regular contacts, in that there are two different powers in each lens to accommodate both distance vision and near focus problems. There are three different types of bifocal contacts, one of which, like the typical bifocal eyeglasses, has a line separating the top of the lens from the bottom with different powers in each. Because adjusting to bifocal contacts may be difficult for different eyes, sometimes monovision contacts are prescribed instead. In this situation, one eye would wear the corrective lens for far-distance seeing, while the other would correct for close coffee-sipping newspaper reading. This option may seem a little far-fetched, but most people tend to adapt well to it, even if it does involve head adjustments at necessary times. You should talk to your eye care professional about the different options if you suffer from presbyopia, and he or she will help get you into a pair of contacts the likes of which your grandfather never dreamed.
