YACHT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The National Marine Manufacturers Association has developed certification programs to help manufacturers comply with established standards and safety regulations, and to help inform the public of such compliance when purchasing equipment. The NMMA program certifies that the design meets the standards in the NMMA Certification Handbook. The manufacturer has the responsibility of assuring that production units are manufactured in compliance with the certified design.

Both the administrative and technical details of these programs are incorporated the handbook. The yacht standards used are based on Standards and Recommended Practices for Small Craft, published by the
American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC)
3069 Solomons Island Road
Edgewater, MD 21037
410-956-1050.

Not all ABYC Standards are incorporated in the certification requirements. All applicable federal requirements, as specified in 33 CFR 1 83~ and parts of ABYC Standards concerning Navigation Lights, Fuel Systems, AC and DC Electrical Systems, for both diesel and gasoline powered yachts; and Ventilation for gasoline powered yachts, are incorporated in the handbook. The Yacht Certification program may continue to add other ABYC standards in future years. The selection of such additional requirements will be by a study of items of safety most affecting the boating public.

The standards used in the NMMA Yacht Certification Program are subject to change in accordance with Federal Standards.

For the 1987 model year NMMA inaugurated a certification program for yacht manufacturers covering navigation lights, fuel Systems, AC and DC electrical systems, for both diesel and gasoline powered yachts; and ventilation for gasoline powered yachts and gasoline powered auxiliary equipment.

A manufacturer participating in this program must certify all models 26 feet in length and over (except racing craft and pontoons) marketed in the U.S.A. for non-commercial use.

Inspectors from nationally recognized independent inspection agencies or NMMA staff visit the manufacturer and physically inspect each model for compliance with all yacht certification standards contained in this handbook.

After resolution of any variances the inspector may find, each model will be certified.

Yachts certified during the previous model year may be "Carried over" without new certification, provided they are not covered by inspection, i.e., the previous inspection report exactly describes how the current model is built.

New models must be inspected and certified prior to shipment.

To obtain a Yacht Certification, all components used must be on the NMMA "Type Accepted" list.
