Release of geographic names in com.au and net.au
On the 1st June 2005, auDA, the Australian Domain Name Regulator, is lifting the restriction on the use of geographic names as domain names in com.au and net.au. auDA has determined that the fairest and most effective way of releasing the geographic names will be by way of individual ballots. The ballot application period is from 1 June 2005 to 31 July 2005.
Over 40,000 previously protected domain names are to be released on 1st June, 2005.
Examples of the names to be released: bondi.com.au, perth.com.au, margaretriver.com.au
Ballot Applications must be lodged with us between 1st June 2005 and 31st July 2005. The ballot applications will then be uploaded to Ausregistry on or around the 31st July 2005. Should there be only one application received for a name, the sole applicant will be the ballot winner. Where there are multiple applications the winner will be drawn at random.
If you are a ballot winner you will be charged the once off auDA mandatory release fee ($825 inc GST) plus a two year domain name registration licence fee ($275.00 incl GST). Registration will be subject to the domain name licence terms and conditions offered by Domain Registration Services.
IMPORTANT: auDA rules stipulate that you may only submit one ballot application per domain name. Multiple applications through different Registrars for the same domain name will invalidate all of your applications for that particular domain name.
Who is eligible to enter the ballot for a geographic domain name?
In order to lodge a ballot application, applicants must satisfy the normal com.au and net.au eligibility and allocation criteria in the Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Rules for the Open 2LDs (2005-01). In brief, this means that:
- applicants must be registered to trade in Australia (eg. company with ACN, business name owner with RBN, trade mark owner with TM number, sole trader with ABN); and
- the geographic name must be an exact match, abbreviation or acronym of the applicant's name, or the applicant must have a "close and substantial connection" with the geographic name.
All applicants should confirm that they satisfy the eligibility and allocation criteria in the Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Rules for the Open 2LDs (2005-01) before lodging a ballot application.
Prior to submitting a Ballot application for a geographic domain name, you must read the following documentation:
