Work Also Starts on Third Research Ship in Series

VT Halter Marine, Inc. and NOAA launched the second of four planned NOAA fisheries survey vessels. The ship was christened Henry B. Bigelow by Catherine Silver of Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, N.H., on behalf of the ship's sponsor, Mrs. Judd Gregg, wife of the senior senator from New Hampshire. The ship will be one of the most technologically advanced fisheries survey vessels in the world when placed in operation in late 2006. "The christening of Henry B. Bigelow is a significant milestone in the modernization of our NOAA fleet," said retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher Jr., Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. The ship's namesake, Henry B. Bigelow, was a renowned oceanographer who worked as a researcher, instructor and professor of zoology at Harvard from 1906 to 1962.

NOAA NAMES FLORIDA'S INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH THE NATION'S FIRST TSUNAMIREADY COMMUNITY ON THE EAST COAST — Officials from the NOAA National Weather Service praised central Florida's Indian Harbour Beach for completing a set of rigorous criteria necessary to earn the distinction of being declared the first TsunamiReady community along the nation's East Coast. "Indian Harbour Beach should take great pride in having gone the extra mile to provide its citizens with the measure of protection TsunamiReady affords," said Brig. Gen. David L. Johnson, USAF (Ret.), director of the NOAA National Weather Service.

NOAA image of the Dimmitt, Texas, tornado of June 2, 1995. NOAA REPORTS NO TORNADO FATALITIES SINCE MARCH, A RECORD — No one has died from a tornado since March in the United States—a first since official records began in 1950, according to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. Normally, during the most active tornado months of April, May and June, 61 percent of all tornado fatalities or an average of 52 deaths occur. Killer tornadoes, however, are possible given the right atmospheric conditions.

Image of North Atlantic right whale with calf off the coast of Florida in February 2005. NOAA CONFIRMS 28th RIGHT WHALE MOTHER-CALF PAIR; Good News for Critically Endangered Species — NOAA Fisheries Service biologists have confirmed the year's 28th unique sighting of a North Atlantic right whale mother-calf pair, making this one of the best calving years on record for these rare and endangered animals. "With so few of these right whales left—approximately 300—we are very excited about sighting another mother-calf pair," said Bill Hogarth, NOAA Fisheries Service director.
