Bug Tracking System

Our guidelines will tell you when and how to report bugs in Opera to our bug tracking team. Please do not submit support requests to the bug tracking system.

What is a bug?

Definition

A software bug may be defined as a coding error that causes an unexpected defect, fault, flaw, or imperfection in a computer program. In other words, if Opera does not perform as the developers intended, it is most likely a bug.

Etymology

The origin of the word "bug" has wrongly been associated with an incident where a moth was pulled out of a Mark II computer. Apparently, the term was used prior to the existance of modern computers to mean an industrial or electrical defect.

When not to submit bug reports

Feature requests are not bugs; please use our forum or wishlist newsgroup instead.

If you are in need of support, please use one of the information sources we have made available on the support page.

Help us open the Web

From time to time Opera may not perform as the user expects, but this is not necessarily caused by a bug in Opera. For example, many Web sites do not adhere to the recommendations set by the W3C. In addition to submitting a bug report to inform us about this problem, we ask you to contact the author of the site in question.

What should you know before reporting a bug?

Reproducibility

Please make sure that you can reproduce the bug before reporting it. In other words, check and see if the same problem occurs more than once under the same circumstances.

Relevant details

Put in as much relevant detail as you can, and be as specific as possible. Include a detailed description of what you were doing prior to and when experiencing the bug. Also let us know what page or pages you were visiting.

Stack dump

If a program crashes and you have access to the stack dump, please copy the contents and include it in your report.

Severity

Did Opera or your computer become unusable after encountering the bug, or does the bug merely make Opera perform oddly under certain circumstances?

Multiple bugs

Do not mention multiple problems in one bug report; if you have seen more than one problem, then file more than one report.

E-mail address

You will not get confirmation by e-mail after submitting. It may, however, be necessary to write you for additional details, and we cannot do that if you have not given us your e-mail address.
