Preparing for Your TripThe first thing to consider for your trip to Alaska is clothing. We recommend that you plan to dress in layers that can be easily removed since the temperature can vary from the low 40's to the high 80's during the summer. Fleece is comfortable and warm. Also, plan on rain, especially while fishing. Rain gear can be purchased locally for about $20. Bear in mind that we have about 20 hours of daylight during the summer, so it's not unusual for visitors to get sunburned, particularly if you spend a lot of time near the water. Lip gloss and sunscreen are definitely a good idea. Alaska has many microclimates. While it may be sunny and warm in Soldotna, it may be raining and cold in Seward. Homer has one of the mildest climates on the peninsula, yet it can be windy and cold at times. If you plan to venture out into some of these areas, dress accordingly and plan for unexpected weather. If you plan to fish, we will provide gear for guided fishing, and you are welcome to borrow gear for bank fishing at our lodge. However, you will need to purchase a fishing license and tags for the species that you intend to fish for. We can also provide boots, shovels and buckets for a clamming expedition, if you are so inclined. We can also provide waders for fishing the river behind Edgewater lodge. If you prefer to bring your own fishing gear, you are certainly invited to do so. You will probably want to do some grocery shopping to prepare meals in our cabin. Produce, drinks, meats and snacks can be purchased locally at several of the markets conveniently located in Soldotna. So, we advise that you budget for these items in planning your trip. Mosquitos are generally not a big problem unless you venture out into some of the more remote locations where there are lakes and lots of standing water. Check here for advice on how to deal with this potential problem. Finally, we advise that you book your trip well in advance. During the peak months from May through August, there is high demand for accomodations and guided fishing. Air travel is also in high demand during this period. Book your flight early! We hope that you will visit us in the very near future. We are dedicated to exceed your expectations for fishing and lodging on the Kenai peninsula. |
