April showers bring May flowers, so what does a shower in August bring? The Perseid Meteor Shower! And forecasters say it could be unusually good. The shower begins, gently, in mid-July when Earth enters the outskirts of a cloud of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. Dust-sized meteoroids hitting the atmosphere will streak across the night sky, at first only a sprinkling, just a few each night, but the rate will build. By the second week of August when the shower peaks on August 12th, sky watchers can expect to see dozens, possibly even hundreds, of meteors per hour.
As comets orbit the Sun, they shed an icy, dusty debris stream along the comet's orbit. When the Earth travels through this stream, we see a meteor shower. Meteors appear to fall from a particular place in the sky. The Perseid Meteor Shower is so named because meteors appear to fall from a point in the constellation Perseus.
If you really want to be sure you don't miss a thing Desert Adventures will be offering 3-hour evening jeep excursions for viewing this spectacular display when an expected 50 150 meteors an hour shoot through the sky, increasing at times to as high as 400 1000 an hour. JOSHUA TREE EXTREME ADVENTURE

Tour Description: This Double Desert Exploration begins at sea level and travels up rugged canyons, climbing 4,200 feet high into the cool Mojave Desert, land of the Joshua trees and Joshua Tree National Park. This is a true off-road adventure traveling through two deserts and the transition zone between two ecosystems along the EXTREME route. Don't forget your camera, as you will want to take pictures of the gigantic boulders, Joshua trees, yuccas, and other lush plant life that thrive in this area.
