Northside Drive Reversible Lane Traffic Analysis
Introduction
Reversible lanes are a commonly implemented traffic control
strategy. Used throughout the US, reversible lanes control traffic on congested
arterials and bridges by allocating roadway lanes to one direction or another by
time of day. This strategy is particularly effective when traffic volumes are
directional in nature and right-of-way is limited.
However, along with its ability
to address traffic congestion issues and make efficient use of available
right-of-way, reversible lanes are perceived as creating driver confusion and being
less safe than other fully designated cross-sections.
In response to requests from the City of Atlanta, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contracted with
Day Wilburn Associates, Inc. (DWA) to perform a traffic and safety analysis of the reversible lane system existing
along Northside Drive from I-75 to Arden Way. This analysis examines the existing reversible lane operations, as well
as alternative cross-sections for use without reversible lanes.

Study Area
The study area investigated in this analysis includes Northside Drive from I-75 to north of Arden Way
as shown in Figure 1. As this figure shows, the study area extends approximately 2.25 miles and includes six signalized
intersections. Land use along the corridor is primarily residential, with many homes maintaining driveways onto Northside
Drive and many residential collector streets accessing Northside Drive. Institutional (North Atlanta High School) and parks
are the other land uses along this urban corridor.
Study Purpose
The purpose of the traffic and safety analysis was to examine the overall safety and operation along the corridor and determine
the impact on safety and corridor level of service (LOS) resulting from the potential removal of the reversible lanes.
Specific alternatives were identified for use of the roadway cross-section with removal of reversible lanes and these were
compared to traffic operations and safety conditions with the reversible lanes in place.
