Splake

What a way to kick off the 2005 fishing season!!!!!!

If  you are not familiar with the "Splake" it is cross between a Lake Trout and Brook Trout.  Of course, the Brown trout was introduced from  Europe in the 19th century and has become a phonomenial game fish here in the United States.

I think the "Splake is one of the most delicious fish on the grill you can catch. Especially the early spring cold water fish.

In the early ice out period these two fish are found in the warmer water near the shores of Green Bay and Little and Big Bays de Noc, in large numbers.

Brown Trout

We troll for both of these species using flat lines on planer boards. Usually a spread of 4-6 lines out. typically the shoreline from Cedar River to Escanaba offers the best reefs and structure.

If you would like to get in an early fishing trip this is a good one to plan. Two days of fishing and two nights of lodging are included. Be sure to bring some warm clothing and some rain gear. We use our 20' Crestliner which is covered but the air can still be a little chilly this time of year. And, don't forget a cooler to take your fish home in.
