BIG BEND FLOAT TRIPS - ONE DAY
"Rivers are a
constant lure to the adventurous instinct of mankind" -- Henry David
Thoreau
Join us....
as we float through one of the many incredible canyons of the Rio
Grande in Big Bend. All of our day trips depart from the Far Flung office at
8:00 a.m., returning about 5:00 p.m. One day trips on the river include:
- Guides
- All river equipment and gear
- Waterproof day bags
- Lunch
- Round-trip shuttle to and from the river
Each day's canyon selection and the type of river craft
(canoe or raft) in which we travel, depends on the
water flows of the Rio Grande. Providing you with an experience that exceeds
your expectations is the most important mission of our company.
The Far Flung Outdoor Center will select from one of the
following canyon trips in order to combine the scenic beauty of the canyons
with the most effective method of river travel. Feel free to contact our office
to find out the current canyon being run.
Colorado Canyon - a
twelve-mile journey down the Rio Grande that cuts through a predominantly
volcanic landscape. This creates Big Bend's darkest canyon as large, colorful
ash flows crate stunning natural features. This section of river travels
through Big Bend State Park, Texas's largest at 275,000 acres.
Santa Elena Canyon -
Downstream; this twenty mile run through a sheer walled limestone canyon was
first fully explored by Captain Robert Hill in 1899. Due to the length of this
canyon, this one day option runs only at higher water flows.
Santa Elena Canyon -
Upstream; at low water flows we shorten the Santa Elena trip by exploring the
lower and more scenic portion of the canyon by canoes. This is an easy float
trip suitable for all ages.
Temple Canyon - For groups of eight or more, we offer the option of
experiencing Temple Canyon by raft. Temple Canyon begins on the east side of
the National Park at LaLinda and meanders eleven miles to the take-out at
Maravillas Canyon. Very seldom traveled, this beautiful canyon experience takes
us along the Wild and Scenic section of the Rio Grande. Special pricing
applies.

Prices...
By Canoe: $115/person
By Raft:
$125/person
Prices include lunch, guides, river equipment, waterproof bags, park use
fees and shuttle service to and from the river. Texas sales tax (7.75%) and
national park entrance fees are not included in the price.
Please note: Effective September 1, 2005 we will be adding a $3/person fuel surcharge to each one adventure to help offset the sudden and significant increase in fuel costs. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
Special note
about our rafts:
We use commercial grade 14-16' rafts with an oar
frame set-up. Guides take the middle position of the boat and row the craft
using two 10-foot oars. This set-up allows 4-6 guests to occupy the front and
rear of the boat. Guests are not required to paddle. When higher water levels
permit, this is the craft of choice.
Special
note about our canoes:
Canoes are a
great choice at lower flows. Canoes are narrower than rafts and can better
maneuver through tight, shallow parts of the river. Canoeing the Rio Grande
does not require any previous experience or an Olympic fitness level - just a
willingness to paddle. Two guests travel in each canoe, which are designed for
stable handling in calm water. Guides travel in separate canoes and carry all
trip gear and lunch. |
