For years, sightholders have been meeting once every 5 weeks, 10 times a year, to inspect their diamond allocations in the London offices of the Diamond Trading Company at 17 Charterhouse Street. Some clients receive a sight in South Africa.
SUPPLIER OF CHOICE
On July 12th, 2000, De Beers announced its new policy with respect to its sightholders and its distribution system. The new "Supplier of Choice" strategy included the creation of a powerful new identity, the introduction of a policy statement, and a code of professional and ethical standards ("Best Practice Principles") to insure continued consumer confidence through the industry's commitment to the highest professional and ethical standards.
- The new Supplier of Choice has put in place a new system of ITO - Intention To Offer.
- On July 2005, 11 new sightholders were added to the existing client list of 84 (on the 2001 client lists).
- Changes have also been put in place with reference to those sightholders who are receiving a sight in South Africa.
- Payment for the "sight" is in advance of the delivery of the rough to the sightholder.
- Nicky Oppenheimer, the Chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., is quoted as having said (2001) that the "strategy places De Beers and its partners in a stronger position to meet the business and consumer challenges of the future". For more information on the subject: www.debeersgroup.com
SIGHTHOLDERS LIST
I‘m not amongst the privileged few with access to the extranet of the DTC - so I‘ve put together my own list of sightholders (84 + 11) - hopefully, without too many mistakes. I‘m not sure if I got all of the 95, but I‘m pretty close. Mistakes will be corrected in the next few weeks, as those involved with them will surely let me know.
For lack of a better description, this is my personal totally unofficial give-it-a-good-try-temporary list. Let me know if you‘ve been included and you shouldn‘t have been, or, alternatively, if you‘ve been left out (unintentionally), and I‘ll make the corrections at the end of August.

Schachter & Namdar (Pty) Ltd in Johannesburg in South Africa, is allocated the South African sights from the DTC. and has integrated a system to separate its South African polished production completely from that of diamonds with other countries of origin.
The company has 2 brands: "Proudly South African" (since early 2005) and "Brilliant Rose", (approximately 5 years).
The "Proudly South African" campaign was launched in March 2005, and is said to have received good support from the South African government. Retail partners are provided with a full "Proudly South African" marketing information include a VCD, brochures, and leaflets with educational messages aimed at guiding customers through the process. Consumer-oriented advertising campaigns in individual markets includes: In Hong Kong, print advertisements and editorials in leading consumer magazines; in Singapore and Malaysia, television commercials and advertisements (in local consumer magazines and in-flight publications by national airlines).
