Device Operability Report - October
The TMC strives to keep the NaviGAtor system in top working order. We have set goals for the "uptime" of cameras and signs. At any given moment, we attempt to have 95% of the cameras and message signs working. With this in mind, TMC employs camera and sign maintenance contracts. These contractors assist our own staff with routine and emergency maintenance of the devices. With nearly 100 message signs and about 325 freeway cameras, these crews are always busy.

This month's status report: (October 2005)
Operational Message Signs: 79 working signs of 98 (80.1%)- Last Month: 90.1%
Operational Freeway Cameras: 297 working cameras of 345 (86.1%) - Last Month: 88.5%

The number of signs in working order decreased this month. Most of the problems exist on signs that are outside the metro Atlanta area - namely Gainesville, Dalton and the coastal areas. The rest of the metro area signs are in good shape, with the majority of the outages due to communications cuts associated with construction.

The percentage of working cameras is als down from last month, mainly due a problem being experienced on I-20. Vagrants are pulling copper cables out of the control boxes for these devices to sell to scrap yards. These activities have rendered much of I-20 near Lee St and Lowery Blvd inoperable. The total number of cameras (345) includes 32 cameras in the Macon area. Although we don't yet provide these images on the website, our operators at the Macon TMC utilize them daily. We plan to add the Macon cameras this month to the site, as we develop a means to transmit the images to Atlanta. SR 141 and SR 166 cameras were recently added to the site and have increased the total number of cameras available on Navigator.
