WHAT EXACTLY IS AN "ECO" TOUR? "Eco" is short for "ecology" and signals our respect for the natural environment and our passion for introducing you to this fascinating desert region. You will be amazed at how much you will learn--and how much fun you will have in the process!

HOW ROUGH IS THE RIDE? Many of our tours are very gentle, allowing anyone from 6 to 106 to go! We even took a man for his 100th birthday! While we do offer more rugged adventures (such as our Joshua Tree Extreme Jeep Eco-tour) we provide ecologically oriented "eco" tours, not thrill rides. While it is definitely an off-road adventure, we stick to a network of rough-hewn jeep trails to minimize our impact on the natural environment.

IS IT DANGEROUS? Absolutely not! Our guides are professional experts. Each is first aid and CPR trained, and all jeeps have daily maintenance and constant communication with headquarters.

CAN CHILDREN GO? Of course! We take children 4 years old and over on our San Andreas Fault "Earthquake" Tour. We will take smaller children on private jeeps or other tours. California Law requires that children under 6 years of age or 60 pounds must ride in an approved child safety seat. To ensure the safety of your child, you must provide your own car seat.

WHERE DO DESERT ADVENTURES ECO-JEEP TOURS GO? Many of our jeep-tours go to Desert Adventures' private Metate Canyon Ranch, a 1,000 acre pristine preserve right on the San Andreas Fault. We also offer jeep tours to other sections of the San Andreas Fault and to the Joshua Tree National Park.

HOW LONG WILL WE TRAVEL BEFORE WE ARE OFF ROAD? The desert is growing quickly and traffic congestion is becoming more common. Thus to ensure that you get the quality tour that you paid for, our public tours leave from Coco's Restaurant or TA Travel Center, both conveniently located right off Interstate 10. From both of these locations, you will be off road in just a matter of minutes. We do offer hotel pickup for for a surcharge on our public tours, but be aware that transfer times can run up to 30 minutes each way and may reduce the amount of time you spend off-road.

HOW MANY GUESTS FIT IN ONE JEEP? Each jeep carries 7 passengers plus your Naturalist Guide/Driver.

DO WE NEED TO BRING WATER? Our jeeps are stocked with plenty of cool bottled water and granola bars.

ARE THERE RESTROOMS? Clean restrooms are available on our Faultline Express, San Andreas Fault "Earthquake" Adventure, Indian Cultural Adventure, and Badlands of the Wild West Adventure.

WHAT KIND OF SHOES AND CLOTHES SHOULD I WEAR? You should wear closed toe shoes with rubber soles (no open toes). Desert temperatures change quickly, so dress in layers and bring sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen.

CAN I BRING A VIDEO OR OTHER CAMERA? Absolutely, the photo opportunities are wonderful.

DO YOU GET OUT OF THE JEEP? IS THERE HIKING INVOLVED? HOW DIFFICULT? Yes, on most of our tours, you get out of your jeep several times to see the desert up close and personal. (However our Faultline Express tour is primarily a driving tour). Every adventure is designed to meet our guest’s needs, desire and ability. We offer everything from casual nature walks to the infamous “hike of death”.

WHAT KIND OF WILDLIFE WILL WE SEE? Desert wildlife includes coyotes, kit fox, tarantulas, scorpions, an occasional mountain lion, rattle snakes and other cool snakes (don’t be scared….they are more scared of you and will hide in most instances: unless you are lucky!) Most desert wildlife is seen early morning or late in the afternoon just before sunset.

HOW KNOWLEDGEABLE ARE THE GUIDES? Desert Adventures' guides were called "America's Best Guides" by Conde' Nast Traveler Magazine. Every guide goes through an exhaustive 3-month initial training program before they are allowed in a jeep with passengers. Our guides' training doesn't stop at 3 months, however. Rather, it is an ongoing process and we encourage each guide to develop his or her own area of expertise by doing independent reading and research or attending specialty workshops or classes. Our lead guides are constantly updating our tour information based on what the guides learn from each other and their outside research and many of our guides have received 10 or more years of ongoing training and personal tour development. All of our guides are all experts on the desert flora, fauna, history, and geology, and they are happy to customize the adventure to meet your interests.

ARE WE GOING TO THE PALM SPRINGS INDIAN CANYONS? No, Desert Adventures does not offer jeep adventures to the Indian Canyons because there aren’t any off-road trails. We do offer group bus tours to the Indian Canyons and our San Andreas Earthquake Adventure and Indian Cultural Adventure will take you to a large palm oasis located right along the San Andreas Fault!

CAN INDIVIDUALS SIGN UP FOR A DINNER OR SPECIAL EVENT? On occassion we offer public dinners and event. However most of our dinner programs and parties are for private groups.
